In progress

Porter’s Five Forces explains why some industries earn more than others. The stronger the forces, the more of the value created in the industry is taken by buyers, suppliers, rivals, new entrants, or substitutes, and the less is left as profit.

Everything above runs in your browser and saves to this device only. It opens on a sample for boutique hotels in Lisbon. Name your own industry and score each statement by how far you agree.

How it works

Every statement is written so that agreement means a stronger force. Each force’s score is the mean of its statements on a 1 to 5 scale.

Force score = mean of its statement scores
Industry attractiveness = 6 − mean of the five force scores
High at 3.67 or above, moderate from 2.33, low below 2.33

The radar chart shows the shape of the pressure: a large, even shape means a tough industry, and one long spike points to the force to manage first. Forces scoring 3.5 or more are listed as the main pressures on profit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Porter's Five Forces?

Porter's Five Forces is a framework for judging how attractive an industry is. The five forces are the threat of new entrants, the bargaining power of suppliers, the bargaining power of buyers, the threat of substitutes, and rivalry among existing competitors. Strong forces leave less profit for the firms in the industry.

How do you measure the strength of each force?

Score statements about each force, such as how easily buyers switch provider, from 1 to 5. A force's score is the mean of its statements. This tool rates industry attractiveness as 6 minus the mean of the five force scores.

What makes an industry attractive in Porter's Five Forces?

Weak forces make an industry attractive: high barriers to entry, many small suppliers, buyers who cannot easily switch, few substitutes, and calm rivalry. In this tool an attractiveness score of 3.67 or more counts as high.

What is an example of Porter's Five Forces for hotels?

For boutique hotels in Lisbon, buyer power is strong because booking platforms show every rate side by side, and substitutes are strong because short-term rentals compete for the same guests. Supplier power is weak. The tool opens on this example.
