PESTEL Analysis Builder

PESTEL Analysis Builder is a free browser tool that scores political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal factors.
In progress

PESTEL scans the macro environment, the forces outside any one firm’s control. It sits alongside SWOT: PESTEL supplies many of the opportunities and threats a SWOT then weighs against the organisation’s own strengths and weaknesses.

Everything above runs in your browser and saves to this device only. It opens on sample factors for a European hotel group. Add the factors in the wider environment that could affect your organisation, score each one, and the tool ranks them across all six categories.

How it works

Each factor is scored twice on a 1 to 5 scale: impact, meaning how much it would affect the organisation, and likelihood, meaning how probable it is within the planning period.

Priority = impact × likelihood (1 to 25)

The scatter plot places every factor by its two scores, and the priority list ranks them across all six categories. Factors in the top right of the plot need a plan. Factors in the bottom left can be monitored.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a PESTEL analysis?

A PESTEL analysis is a scan of the six external forces that shape a market: political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal. It picks out changes outside any one firm's control, so a business can plan for them before they arrive.

How do you score PESTEL factors?

Rate each factor's impact on the organisation and its likelihood within the planning period, each from 1 to 5. Multiplying the two gives a priority from 1 to 25 that ranks factors across all six categories.

What is the difference between PEST and PESTEL?

PEST covers political, economic, social, and technological factors. PESTEL adds environmental and legal factors, which matter more now that climate rules, sustainability reporting, and consumer law shape most markets.

What is a PESTEL example for the hotel industry?

For a European hotel group, tourist tax rises are political, energy costs are economic, demand for wellness breaks is social, AI trip planners are technological, heatwaves are environmental, and EU rules on short-term rentals are legal. The tool opens on this example.

Is this PESTEL Analysis Builder free?

Yes. The PESTEL Analysis Builder is free and opens straight away in any modern browser, including on a phone. Factors stay in your browser tab, on your device.
