Product Life Cycle Stage Identifier

Product Life Cycle Stage Identifier is a free browser tool that fits an S-curve to sales history and estimates the current life cycle stage.
In progress

Products tend to pass through four stages: introduction, growth, maturity, and decline. Each stage calls for a different marketing mix. This tool reads the stage from the shape of the sales history, and plots where the product sits on the curve.

Everything above runs in your browser and saves to this device only. It opens on quarterly bookings for a serviced apartment brand. Paste your own sales history, oldest period first.

How it works

The tool fits a logistic curve, the classic S shape, to sales per period.

S(t) = K ÷ (1 + e−r(t − t0))
K is the ceiling, r the growth rate, t0 the midpoint

The curve is fitted by searching over r and t0, with K solved by least squares at each step. Introduction runs until the curve reaches 10% of its ceiling, growth until 80%, and maturity after that. A logistic curve never turns down, so decline is read from the data: two periods in a row falling by more than 5%.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the product life cycle?

The product life cycle describes four stages a product passes through: introduction, growth, maturity, and decline. Sales rise slowly, then quickly, then level off and eventually fall, and each stage calls for a different marketing mix.

How do you identify the product life cycle stage?

Read the stage from the shape of sales over time. This tool fits an S-curve to sales per period and places the latest period on it. Decline is detected when sales fall more than 5% in two periods in a row.

What marketing mix suits each product life cycle stage?

Introduction builds awareness and trial. Growth widens distribution and builds preference. Maturity defends share and differentiates. Decline prunes the range and cuts cost. The tool lists product, price, place, and promotion priorities for the estimated stage.

How much sales data does the product life cycle tool need?

It needs at least 6 periods of equal length, such as quarters, and 12 or more gives a steadier fit. Seasonal sales work better once the seasonal pattern is removed.

Is this Product Life Cycle Identifier free?

Yes. The Product Life Cycle Identifier is free and opens straight away in any modern browser, including on a phone. Everything you enter is processed in your browser and stays on your device.
